Scar management is an essential component of the treatment programme provided by OTs working within burn care, to minimise the impact of burn scars on the individual’s physical and psycho-social functioning.  Much of the knowledge I have gained in the 14 years I have been working within this very specialist field has been experiential as there has been very little in the way of formal training available within the UK.  OSCARE, as the first independent, multi-disciplinary research and aftercare centre for burn scars, has pioneered research and innovation in scar management.  They founded Scar Academy with the intention of sharing knowledge on scar treatments to ensure high quality care for every individual affected by scars.  This has been an excellent opportunity for me to increase knowledge in the most recent, evidence based techniques available to minimise the long-term effects of scarring in the patients I treat.
