3 Weeks To Go! Strike a Light: The Art and Science of Occupational Therapy

There are just 3 weeks to go until the opening of “Strike A Light: The Art and Science of Occupational Therapy,” and things are really starting to take shape!

This week, the exhibition curators, Jemma Channing and Dr Sophie Knight, paid a visit to Rugby Art Gallery and Museum to do some final planning for the layout of the exhibition. Seeing the space with fresh eyes is such an important part of the process, thinking about how visitors will move through the story of occupational therapy, where each artwork will sit, and how we can lay out the interactive parts of the exhibition to maximise engagement. It’s the moment when everything that has existed on paper and in conversation starts to feel very real.

The visit also included a wonderful opportunity to meet Jessica Hartshorne, the artist making a new commission for the exhibition with The Good Times group, whose energy and enthusiasm were an absolute highlight of the day. Seeing their responses to the themes of the exhibition, their creativity and keenness to participate reminded us exactly why this project matters, occupational therapy is about people, and it’s people who make it come alive. We were also able to catch up with Jessica about how the process of working with the group had been and how she adapted creative activities so everyone could participate and contribute.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, we’ve been working with printers to produce high-quality prints and scans of some of the original artworks featured in the exhibition. It’s painstaking and careful work, particularly for highly detailed work, but the results are extraordinary; details and textures have been captured and reproduced, ready to be shared with audiences for the first time.

We’ll keep sharing updates and behind-the-scenes moments as we count down to opening day on Tuesday, 14th April. Follow along and let us know what you’re most looking forward to seeing!
