ASD Interbention Strategies: is it sensory or is it behaviour?

Our occupational therapy team are receiving increasing requests for sensory assessments and interventions. However, within the Learning Disabilities team, families and case/support providers there is still limited knowledge and understanding of clients’ sensory needs and difficulties, how these can impact on everyday activities and engagement in particular, and the role these can play in clients who present with behaviours that challenge. By participating in this training I have not only enhanced my knowledge and skills in identifying sensory needs and developing sensory-based treatment strategies tailored to the individual needs, but I am also able to promote to others the value and purpose of using sensory integration support strategies as part of my occupational therapy approach to contribute towards reducing behavioural challenges and to significantly improve client’s functional performance in their activities of daily living.
