5th International Conference on Cerebral Palsy and other Childhood-onset Disabilities

In terms of my own practice I was particularly influenced by the presentation on translating local research into global recommendations and back to the local context. Working in a national specialist service for children with Rett Syndrome I am frequently challenged by occupational therapists in the community when I recommend elbow gaitors to prevent self-injurious behaviours in these children. As a result of that talk I came home and completed an updated review of the literature in the area….My next steps involve audit of our assessment protocols in the coming year to ensure best practice within my team. We have also agreed to host both the HAI and the Mini AHA through discussions at the conference. These are standardised assessments for young children with hemiplegia that have been developed by occupational therapists which have excellent validity and reliability. They are also useful for goal setting and as outcome measures. This will allow more therapists in the UK to access this specialist training and this can only be positive for practice…..In conclusion this conference has been an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of best practice across the many services that my team are involved with. I have already been able to put some of this new knowledge to use and have plans to do more in the medium and long term. From a strategic perspective the knowledge that I have gained has been influential on my thinking for the future direction of the department and will greatly assist with our goal of knowledge transfer to our community colleagues.
