Allied Professionals Forum and the International Symposium on ALS/MND
Initially, I did not feel that I gained a great deal from the conference but on reflection I realise that I have. The most significant learning for me was on how self-esteem and self-efficacy affects quality of life and how therapists, in the way they relate/react to clients, can have a major impact on these. I have been working for so long in this field that I do things automatically, it has given me a boost knowing that there is theoretical knowledge behind what I do. As therapists, we must remember to have a greater understanding of the journey clients and their families go through before obtaining a diagnosis, which can affect how they engage with services. We must ask people about their fears now and for the future and we may need to speak to family members and clients separately about their wishes and feelings.
